Wendy King has been with ConocoPhillips for over 30 years and is now the vice president for the
Gulf Coast and Rockies Business Unit. She's worked in seven business units and five countries. Her
roles have taken her to Alaska, Australia, Nigeria, Scotland, and now, back to Houston.
Throughout her career, she's learned to adapt and appreciate different workplace cultures and
norms – all while raising two children along with her husband of more than 20 years, who has also
built a successful career at ConocoPhillips.
Wendy grew up in Nebraska with small-town roots, born in a town with less than 300 people. Her
father exemplified the values of hard work and commitment, working in the agriculture industry for
over 50 years, and instilled those values in her.
While in high school, Wendy enjoyed math and science; however, she wasn’t fully aware of the broad
range of careers available in STEM fields. One of her teachers ultimately encouraged her to explore
an education in engineering, which led her to the Colorado School of Mines. When visiting the
university for the first time, Wendy met a female professor from a similar background with whom
she connected. These experiences taught her that representation matters, and she recognizes the
impact her teachers had in opening her mind to different opportunities within STEM fields. As a
result, she’s passionate about supporting teachers as they work to develop new programs to
empower young girls to develop skills in math and science.
Additionally, whether male or female, Wendy has had many role models and support systems who
helped her through challenges in her career and as she balanced her personal and family life. She
talks about encouraging others to expand their connections and shows that you can build a
meaningful career regardless of your circumstances or background. Whether that be coming from a
small town, being part of a dual-career household, being a working mom or being part of a younger
generation entering the workforce with new ideas.
